Phenomena-Based Science Curriculum & Professional Learning for the Next Generation!

Cereal City Science - Ready for the Next Generation!

Why Cereal City Science?

We believe tomorrow’s leaders can be found in math and science classrooms all over the country. By challenging students to take on the roles of scientists and engineers, we help them to develop the creative, critical, and analytical thinking skills that will open a world of opportunity.

With that philosophy in mind, Cereal City Science offers a phenomenon-based Kindergarten through 8th grade science curriculum designed for the Next Generation Science Standards and the Common Core State Standards by integrating science, mathematics and literacy through an interdisciplinary approach. We provide STEM curriculum, materials, and professional learning all designed to support district and classroom implementation of 3-Dimensional Learning and to build science leadership capacity within an organization.

Built from the Ground Up for 3-Dimensional Learning

The shift to three-dimensional learning allows students to explore real world phenomena in an ongoing process of questioning, investigating, developing, and refining explanatory models about the world.

The National Research Council’s (NRC) framework describes a vision of three-dimensional learning that includes:

  • science and engineering practices
  • crosscutting concepts
  • disciplinary core ideas

The Cereal City Science program provides three-dimensional science instruction in the classroom for students to engage in all four domains of science proficiency (physical science, earth science, life science, and engineering).

Designed with the 5E Learning Cycle (engage, explore, explain, elaborate, evaluate), our curriculum provides teachers with instructional units that include opportunities for interaction in the classroom as students:

Through Cereal City Science, students are becoming scientists and engineers, and as a result, they're talking about science at a deeper level than ever before.

What Teachers Are Saying

"Cereal City Science has all the tools and training needed to teach the Next Generation Science Standards using 3-Dimensional, multiple literacy practices. My students are so engaged and look forward to science every day. I’ve seen an increase in the use of science vocabulary and practices in their daily lives. They use critical thinking skills across the curriculum and instead of looking to me for answers, they are now looking to one another to figure things out. Though it’s not what learning and teaching are all about, testing is always on a teacher’s mind. My students make wonderful gains on both the NWEA and MSTEP tests."

Curriculum Designed for the Next Generation!

NGSS Alignment by "Topic"

Each unit aligns with the performance expectations as formatted in the "Topic" arrangement of the NGSS, weaving content, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts throughout.

CCSS Alignment for ELA and Mathematics

The unit format breaks down the "silos" of learning and integrates reading, writing, and mathematics within the process of figuring out phenomenon and solving problems.

Problem and Phenomenon-Based Units

Each unit begins with a problem to solve or phenomenon to figure out. As students figure out and explain the phenomenon, they discover content knowledge that they use to explain the solution or phenomenon to others.

Formative Assessment and Assessment Probes

What do we know? What have we learned? What more do we need to know? The teacher guide includes a facilitation guide with questioning techniques and assessment probes to identify student progress and understanding.

Performance Tasks

Apply what we have learned to solve problems and design projects! Students are assessed through their completed projects or solutions, scientific explanations - claim, evidence, and reasoning - and presentations.
